AI agents take another step into the physical world
Anthropic’s new Model Hardware Standard has placed a spotlight on the next phase of artificial intelligence: agents that can move beyond digital tasks and interact with physical equipment.
The company has introduced a research preview of the standard, which is designed to allow AI agents to safely operate physical devices used in scientific research and advanced manufacturing. According to news reports, the framework could be used with instruments such as microscopes, robotic arms and other programmable equipment used in complex technical environments.

Until recently, much of the business conversation around agentic AI focused on digital work.
